Hypertension During Pregnancy
As a doula, one of my priorities is ensuring that you feel informed and empowered during pregnancy. You might be able to tell since it’s in the name. Hypertension or high blood pressure can make a great impact during pregnancy. We will dive deeper and discuss whos at risk and what to keep a eye out for.
What is hypertension in pregnancy?
Chronic Hypertension- diagnosed before pregnancy or before 20 weeks

Preeclampsia- more severe HBP often protein in urine
Possible symptoms to look for:
persistent headaches
blurred vision or light sensitivity
swelling in hands, face or feet (outside of the normal )
sudden weight gain
upper stomach pain (right side)
nausea or vomiting (later in pregnancy)
RED FLAGS: MEDICAL ATTENTION ASAP
While hypertension can happen to anyone, pregnant or not, woman or man. There are some factors that increase your chance such as:
first time pregnancy

There isn’t really a treatment but more management. The biggest is stress, stress in general is bad for your health especially during pregnancy. The topic of stress is so important, I’ll write separately on that. Adjusting your lifestyle and diet will be greatly beneficial. Your provider might prescribe medication if needed along with extra checks and test. In severe cases, they might recommend early delivery for the safety of both mother and baby. Alot of times during labor they will start you on magnesium to help manage blood pressure. In some cases, hypertension doesn’t always go away after delivery. Preeclampsia can still happen postpartum, up to 6 weeks later. Watch for the same symptoms above and keep your postpartum checkups. Managing stress, staying hydrated and resting as much as possible are key during recovery.
As a doula, I’m here to support you by:
